PDP leader Naeem Akhtar released from detention

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former minister Naeem Akhtar was released in Srinagar after being placed under house arrest for over a month.

This comes amid hectic political deliberations in Jammu and Kashmir between mainstream regional parties, including the PDP and the National Conference (NC), ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s all-party meeting on June 24.

The PDP leader was put under house arrest on May 10 after he was released from his five-month preventive detention at MLA Hostel in Srinagar.

Several PDP and NC leaders, including Akhtar and Sartaj Madani, were taken into preventive custody on December 21, a day before the counting of the Zilla Vikas Parishad elections.

Akhtar, a close aide of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, was first detained in August 2019 and later booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA). He was released in June 2020 after 10 months in custody but was taken into custody again in December last year.

Mehbooba Mufti’s uncle Madani was also released from preventive custody on Saturday.

The PDP on Sunday authorized Mehbooba to take a decision on the call for the June 24 talks. The issue will also be discussed in the PAGD meeting on Tuesday, which includes both the NC and the PDP.
