LG inaugurates 500-bed DRDO-built Kovid-19 hospital in Jammu

A patient attendant at Government Medical College Jammu had an interview with JK Media executive Ashish Kohli. He talked about his experience at GMC and how doctors treat other patients in the hospital.

Watch video

> Sir, how long have you been in the hospital and what have you seen?

A few days ago I stayed overnight in a hospital with a relative admitted to GMC. I noticed that almost every patient here is helpless, searching for doctors and requesting paramedic staff to keep a check on them. No PPT kit, no mask, no sanitizer is provided by the administration. Only junior doctors who are still studying are practicing in the hospital, while the staff are working on Rs. The 6500 is barely performing its duty.

Today in room number 5 no VIP is probably the health commissioner I think, his wife was hospitalized. Every senior doctor is present in the room prepared for his treatment. Paramedical staff is alert for what medicines to give and what not to do. Are there no such facilities for ordinary people as well?

I saw that 5-7 corpses were being carried that night. If doctors were present for them, I think they would have been alive today. I am not against senior doctors treating VIPs but I think they should treat every patient as VIP. Only then a good health cycle can be maintained.

> Are senior doctors only for VIP patients in government hospitals and not for the general public?

I don’t think they are for normal patients! (Sarcastic smile) I have seen many of them crying for help in an emergency. Some also carry their own oxygen cylinders. But no one comes to his rescue.

Sometimes I think these doctors are also associated with ministers. See they do not work for ordinary people but as soon as there is some VIP entry in the hospital, they run here to save their jobs. He fears his suspension. We are like little ants for all of them.

Q. Absolutely, a doctor is suspended if he is unable to save the life of a VIP, but is still in his position when 40 people are dying. Same with some ‘babu logs’. Why?

The Union Territory has the rule of bureaucrats and the rule of administration. Nobody wants to work for ordinary people. We are nothing to them. Modi ji said that the Governor’s rule would prove to be good for the people of UT but I think we were better during the party rule.

Tell me one thing, which law says that there is a media ban in the hospital premises? I have never seen any country preventing media journalists from entering hospitals. Media is the voice of the people. Will you not enter the premises to meet a patient? Media is the fourth pillar if democracy and banning them is something that I do not appreciate.

Some caretakers have started their own businesses inside the campus. They charge Rs 3000-4000 for the care of Kovid patients.

All I want is that the doctors and other ministers remember that one day their lives will come to an end. Your days will not be the same. If you are happy today, then you may have trouble tomorrow. You will face your karma there. Let us not be cruel to anyone because they are dear to someone.

Gas cylinder explodes in Digiana, 3 shops burnt to ashes

On Tuesday, a bicycle repair shop in Rani Talab, Digyana area of Gandhi Nagar exploded and caught fire while filling LPG. The fire spread rapidly, and engulfed two shops (a shop making aluminum doors and windows and a glass shop) as well as a cycle repair shop and a jalebi shop.

After getting information, four fire tenders and emergency services reached the spot; After much effort, they brought the fire under control, but all three shops were burnt to ashes. According to the information, this accident happened around 7 pm. According to the people present on the spot, a cycle repair shop in Rani Talab was illegally filling gas from a large LPG cylinder to a smaller cylinder. During this, a cylinder caught fire. After the fire, the people present in the shop fled leaving the burning cylinder in the shop itself.

The fire spread rapidly as the gas cylinder caught fire. The roof of the shop was covered with wood and tin. Apart from this, junk was also lying inside the shop. As soon as the fire broke out in the junk, the fire broke out and engulfed the wood in the roof. Within moments, the fire spread to two shops built alongside a cycle repair shop. Both the shops were open at the time of the accident. The people present in them saved their lives by running away from the shops. A case of setting fire to Gandhi Nagar police station has been registered.

What caused the fire is being investigated. There were eight gas cylinders in the shop. The contractor will complete the artificial lake in 10 months, SAC approves the revised project

The dream of artificial lake in Jammu will now be fulfilled soon. The State Administrative Council (SAC) in Srinagar on Tuesday chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha approved a revised project worth Rs 73.34 crore for the construction of the remaining works of Tawi barrage. This project will have to be completed by the contractor within 10 months after the e-tender.

The proposed barrage on the Tawi River is one of the three sub-projects of the prestigious artificial lake project. It is for recreational activities like boating and water sports to promote regional tourism in Jammu. Apart from this, the motive was also to make the city of Jammu beautiful. The other two sub-projects were the Tawi River Development Project and the beautification and mobilization of tourism facilities. These were to be completed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Tourism.

The project was initially approved for completion in 2010-11 at Rs 70 crore. The project was supported by raising funds from various sources for the construction of an artificial lake, but the project was stalled for seven years due to the inaction of the contractor. Due to this the tender was canceled and then its price increased.

Now the administrative council has approved the revised project. It will be completed through e-tendering within ten months from the date of allotment at an estimated cost of Rs.131.53 crore. There is an additional fund of 73.34 crores, while Rs 58.19 crores has already been spent. Lt Governors Farooq Khan and Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar, Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta and Principal Secretary to Lieutenant Governor Nitishwar Kumar were present in the meeting.

The completion of the artificial lake project will boost water recreation and sports facilities apart from promoting commercial activities around the artificial lake. This will create employment opportunities for the local people and the lake will attract tourists to the city of Jammu.
